Recent corals (Kissling Collection)

Corals are mostly colonial marine animals related to jellyfish and sea anemones. Most build skeletons from calcium carbonate, and these skeletons are frequently major components of reefs in tropical seas. PRI’s collection of modern (Recent) corals includes more than 1000 specimens representing more than 100 species, mostly from the Florida Keys and Caribbean, but also including material from the Philippines and other regions. Much of PRI’s holdings came from the Kissling Collection, which was assembled in the 1950s and 1960s by Don Kissling, a professor at SUNY Binghamton.
