Fourteen teams of scientists and volunteers working in taxonomic groups worked to count as many species as they could over a 24-hour period at the Cayuga Nature Center and the old-growth forest remnant Smith Woods starting at 5 pm on September 8, 2017 and finishing at 5 pm the next day.. During the time it takes for Earth to complete one rotation about its axis they cataloged over 500 macroscopic species and 25,000 species. These are the stories of each of the taxa groups:
