Cornell's Gilbert Mastodon Research

Cornell's Gilbert Mastodon is more than was originally bargained for. The remains are not one mastodon as originally assumed in at the excavation site, but a mastodon and a partial mammoth. The images above are some of the bones from the site, being laid out at PRI for scientific study. The image at the left is an attempt to articulate one of the leg bones. In the middle is what is thought to be a mammoth and mastodon vertebrae, side by side. At the right are comparisons of the two skeletons.
