The Hyde Park Mastodon

The Museum of the Earth is home to the remains of several mastodons. One of the most complete specimens ever found is on public display here — the Hyde Park Mastodon. A centerpiece of the Museum, the story of this mastodon’s discovery has even been the subject of a Discovery Channel documentary.

During the preparation of the skeleton for final display, scientific-quality casts of the bones were made to allow other scientists the chance to study it. Full reproductions of the skeleton can even be purchased by museums who aren't fortunate enough to have their own!

More facts about the Hyde Park Mastodon can be found here.
